
The Village's wildlife is an incredible part of every visit to Ruidoso. From elk to wild horses, and birds to bears, you truly never know what you might stumble across in town or on a hike. We want our visitors to enjoy "Wild Ruidoso" in the safest, most exciting way, so keep reading for a local's guide to our wildlife population. Wildlife Guide The Land of Enchantment is home to tons of wild animals, and Ruidoso is no exception. While you may be surprised at what you stumble across, the animals that are most commonly seen are birds (over 200 species migrate through or are native to the area), bears, elk, and of course, our famous wild horses. Safety Tips Remember, the animals you see roaming the area are WILD. Please keep a safe distance and refrain from feeding or petting the animals. - Do not feed wild animals (including deer, horses, and elk) - Travel in groups - Do not approach wild animals - Make noise - Never follow wild animals - Don't block a wild animal's line of travel - Use a telephoto lens, spotting scope, or binoculars to photograph or observe wild animals - Maintain a safe distance - If you find an animal that you believe needs help, call the New Mexico Wildlife Center for further instructions at 505-753-9505 Outdoor Camping Tips - Leave pets at your rental. Pets may attract bears and mountain lions. If dogs are permitted, keep them on a leash so they don't interact with wildlife. - Carry EPA registered bear pepper spray when hiking and camping in bear country - Set up cooking, eating, and supply areas at least 100 yards from your sleeping area. - Keep sleeping bags and tends completely free of food, beverages, and odorous items when not in use. - Use bear resistant food containers, where available or required, to store food and odorous items when not in use. - Do not sleep in the clothes you cook or handle fish and game in. The odors may attract wildlife. - Keep children within your sight.
