May 6-9: Military Appreciation Weekend: Ruidoso/Ruidoso Downs. The event is being hosted by the Ruidoso Downs Racetrack on the infield. Every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces will be participating. May 29: Billy the Kid Trail Ride: Ft. Sumner, NM to Lincoln, NM. The Billy the Kid Trail Ride begins in Ft. Sumner, and travels 125 miles to Lincoln over the same route that Billy the Kid used to move between Lincoln and Ft. Sumner after his infamous escape from the Lincoln County Jail in April 1881. July 1: Fourth of July Fireworks Extravaganza: Inn of the Mountain Gods. The festivities begin at 5 pm and guests can snack on hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos and cold beverages on the patio while enjoying great live entertainment and other fun activities. The celebration continues into the night and concludes with southern New Mexico's largest firework display over Lake Mescalero. The event is free to attend and open to all ages. The Pony Express Trail Ride in Lincoln County commemorates the Pony Express, keeping the tradition alive by carrying the U.S. mail on horseback from White Oaks to Lincoln in three days. August 14: 5th Annual Butterfly Release: White Moutain Meadows Pavilion. Off Gavilan Canyon Rd., near the Hull Rd. intersection. 1-2 pm. All butterflies are Monarchs and are $10. Butterflies will be distributed at 1 pm. We will use these butterflies to decorate the Wish Tree at Spencer in December.
