 PRESCRIBED BURNS:

PRESCRIBED BURNS ON SMOKEY BEAR RANGER DISTRICT IN JANUARY

Alamogordo, NM (January 6, 2011) – During the month of January, Smokey Bear Ranger District fire officials plan to conduct a prescribed burn of up to 200 acres behind the ranger station.  The project is primarily comprised of slash that was created from a past fuels reduction project.  The completion of the burn will not only reduce dangerous wildfire fire activity, but will also promote overall forest health.

The prescribed burn will be ignited based on weather conditions that promote fuel consumption and smoke dispersal.  Ignition will produce smoke which will be visible throughout the Ruidoso area, and smoke may linger in the area especially down drainages as it settles due to cold air.  Both smoke and fire activity will be monitored by fire officials.  As always, firefighter and public safety are the top priority.

If you have health issues that will be affected by smoke in these areas, please contact Nate Cordova at 575-937-4865.  For additional information about these prescribed burns or the Lincoln National Forest, please contact the Smokey Bear Ranger District Office at (575) 257-4095, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
